Call for Papers: Connections

Connections – An INSNA Journal

Call for papers

Do you have ideas for a network paper that might not fit in traditional journal outlets? Perhaps an early stage idea, a highly focused essay, a discussion of best or novel practices, a review of a statistical package, an opinion about the future of the field, a novel methodology, etc. We encourage you to consider Connections. Some of the most impactful work appearing in Connections has fit this mold. See, for example, Freeman (1996) on the history of network analysis; Batagelj and Mrvar (1998) introducing the Pajek software package; Borgatti, Jones and Everett (1993) on defining social capital; Krebs (2002) analyzing terrorist networks; Carley. Lee and Krackhardt (2002) on destabilizing networks; Park (2003) hyperlink analysis; Kapucu (2005) on emergency response networks; Kleinbaum and Quintane (2011) on the merits of email data; and Healey (2017) on governance.

Guide for authors

Generally, we are interested in conceptual, empirical, methodological, application or teaching-based manuscripts related to social networks. This includes shorter methodological or empirical notes that would benefit the field as well as ideas that are early in their development.

Submissions

Please submit your work using the online manuscript management system

https://www.editorialmanager.com/connections/default.aspx

On acceptance, Connections articles are made available online directly. Articles are not normally packaged into issues. We are accepting submissions now and until further notice.

In Memory of Prof Loet Leydesdorff

The WATEF members wish to express their heartfelt condolences to Professor Loet Leydesdorff’s family and friends on his passing. He was key to the establishment of the Asia Triple Helix Society, which transformed into the WATEF. His Korean academic colleagues will never forget the impact he had on our field. We believe he contributed immensely to the scientific field of scientometrics, which is now the foundation for big data analytics.

Here’s a link to his lecture from his trip to Korea.

Some Final Words…

Prof. Hanwoo Park

Dear WATEF Members,

I do not want to start this speech with a clichรฉ, to look back on the past years and thank those who helped, but I will live my life cherishing the memories of all of you who have been with me and the association during the past 10 years. Thank you always.

As the small group that started in a small corner of Korea grew into a full-fledged association, the slogan we chanted was: Globally Excellent, Locally Friendly. As the international event DISC expanded to Seoul and overseas, and interdisciplinary seminars continued, our voices spread like echoes.

The WATEF vision and ambitions will not end here today. I hope you will actively participate in the great history that the new president and executive will write in the future.

June 27, 2021

NodeXL Insight Award 2021

The World Association for Triple Helix & Future Strategy Studies (WATEF) is pleased to announce the inauguration of the annual โ€œNodeXL Network Insight Awardโ€ for data-driven studies on social innovation as of September 2018. The WATEF has played an important role in introducing NodeXL, an easy-to-use data collection, social media network analysis and visualization tool, in East Asia in the past five years. A leader in IT infrastructure, as of September 2018, Korea became the third-largest user base country for NodeXL and actually surpassed the U.S. and the U.K. in terms of users per capita.

The WATEF was established to contribute to the development of the Triple Helix in Korean society with data as its foundation. Evolving into a โ€œbig-data societyโ€ is challenging. Dynamic and consistent cooperation is necessary between the academic community, as the main body of knowledge production, corporations that operate within the marketing economy, and the government in charge of coordination and regulation.

To further advance awareness of the value of social network analysis, promote the purpose of our annual conference, and encourage the aims of the Triple Helix Society, the NodeXL Network Insight Award has been established as a symbol of data research excellence. This award will be presented to a published or unpublished paper that utilizes NodeXL or social media network and content analysis as part of its core methodology and visualization. Other visualization tools may also be used. Unpublished award winners may submit their papers to the Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia after presentation by the WATEF.

We are grateful for the support of individuals and institutions in favor of the intent of this award. For further details, please contact the Committee at nodexl.award@gmail.com

Marc Smith (Social Media Research Foundation, USA)

Leslie Tkach-Kawasaki (Tsukuba University, Japan)

Han Woo Park (Yeungnam University, South Korea)

Important dates

  1. Indication of submission โ€“ April 15, 2021
  2. Full paper deadline โ€“ May 15, 2021
  3. Presentation and Award โ€“ at DISC 2021 ONLINE June 18-19
